Fresh Air Friday: Island 22

Sometimes you do not need a big adventure. You just need a place where the kids can run, throw rocks in the water, ride their bikes, and spend some time outside.

That is what makes Island 22 Regional Park one of our favourite hidden gems in Chilliwack.

Located just a few minutes from downtown, Island 22 combines river views, open space, easy walking trails, and plenty of room for kids to explore. It is the kind of place that feels peaceful without requiring a long drive or a difficult hike.

Why We Like It

Island 22 offers something that many parks do not.

Space.

There is room for kids to run, room for bikes and scooters, room to skip rocks, and room for parents to actually relax for a few minutes.

The park sits along the Fraser River and is surrounded by mountain views that remind you why living in the Fraser Valley is so special.

It is simple, which is often exactly what families need.

What Kids Will Love

The biggest attraction for most kids is the river.

There is something about standing along the shoreline, looking for driftwood, throwing rocks into the water, or spotting birds overhead that never seems to get old.

The wide open grassy areas are perfect for:

  • Soccer
  • Frisbee
  • Flying kites
  • Riding bikes

Kids who enjoy nature will also love looking for rabbits, birds, and other wildlife that are often spotted throughout the park.

What the Walk Is Like

The walking trails at Island 22 are mostly flat and easy.

Families can wander along the river, explore different sections of the park, and choose how far they want to go.

This is not a destination where you need hiking boots or a detailed plan.

It is more of a slow-paced family walk where the journey matters more than the destination.

That makes it ideal for younger kids and grandparents.

Good To Know Before You Go

Bring:

We also like keeping a small “summer outing bag” in the car during splash park season so we are not scrambling every time the weather gets warm. Washrooms are available on site and there is plenty of space to spread out.

Why It Works For Families

Some outings feel rushed. Island 22 feels different. There is no admission fee, no schedule to keep, and no pressure to do anything other than enjoy being outside together.

You can stay for twenty minutes or spend an entire afternoon exploring.

The park gives kids freedom to move while giving parents a chance to slow down.

Our Fresh Air Friday Take

Island 22 is one of those places that often gets overlooked because it feels so simple. But sometimes simple is exactly what makes a family outing successful.

Fresh air, river views, mountain scenery, and space for kids to be kids. That sounds like a pretty good Friday to us.
